ABOUT
ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture is a system of complementary medicine in which practitioners stimulate specific and strategic points on the body by inserting thin needles through the skin. For over 5,000 years, acupuncture has been used to promote healing and improve functioning.

How does acupuncture work?

The classical Chinese explanation involves channels of vital energy (known as “qi”), which flow, like rivers, in regular patterns through and on the surface of the body. They bring necessary qi, blood, and fluids to the entire body and thus, maintain health and balance. If there is an obstruction or deficiency in this flow, illness may arise.

Needling specific acupuncture points along these channels can restore the flow of qi and correct imbalances in your physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Acupuncture has been acknowledged as effective for many medical conditions by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the World Health Organization (WHO).  The American College of Physicians has recommended acupuncture as an alternative treatment to drug therapy.

Modern scientific studies indicate that acupuncture influences the central and peripheral nervous system. Evidence shows that it releases endorphins from the brain, which makes acupuncture particularly effective in pain control.

Acupuncture works with the body, harmonizing and balancing energy. It improves circulation, reduces inflammation, and allows the body to heal itself more quickly and more completely.

Although acupuncture can treat many medical conditions, many people without illness or a medical diagnosis use regular acupuncture treatments to enhance their well-being, boost their immune system, and focus on preventive health.

Along with an improvement of their chief complaint, Christine’s patients often report an increase in energy, better digestion, more restful sleep, balanced moods, and better stress management.

We require 24 hours notice for cancellations.

For missed appointments and cancellations less than 24 hours in advance, you will be charged the full amount of the service.

To get the most out of your treatment:

  • Eat about 2 hours before your appointment. Do not go to your treatment hungry and on an empty stomach.

  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol for at least 2 hours before your treatment. Caffeine heightens your “fight-or-flight” response while alcohol dulls your awareness. Both affect your body’s ability to achieve homeostasis and balance during your acupuncture treatment.

  • Wear loose clothing, particularly, pants that you can roll up above the knee.

  • Turn off your mobile phone so that you can fully relax during your treatment.

What to do after your treatment:

Optimize the effects of your treatment by doing the following:

  • Water Water Water. Stay hydrated. Proper hydration helps flush out toxins and adjust your body’s physical and emotional restoration.

  • If you plan to exercise immediately after your treatment, make it light, gradual, and gentle.

  • Take it easy. Don’t schedule something overly strenuous or stressful immediately after your treatment.

  • Wind down earlier that evening and go to bed early to optimize the treatment effects.

How often should you schedule appointments to ensure the best results?

Christine will work with you to create a customized treatment plan based on your current health and goals. Typically, she will schedule treatments close together at the beginning of a treatment cycle. Each treatment gains momentum on the last. If treatments are too far apart, you might lose the progress achieved through previous treatments.

People may respond at different rates to acupuncture due to several factors. Christine can typically assess your progress within the first and follow-up treatment.  A typical treatment course for chronic conditions may consist of 10-12 treatments and 4-6 treatments for acute conditions.

Generally speaking, she will space acupuncture treatments further and further apart as you steadily improve with each treatment. Maintenance sessions are often recommended every 4-6 weeks to keep your body in a healthy and balanced state.
